Entry through the Shavat border crossing from Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan requires a pre-arranged visa and a government-assigned guide who accompanies visitors throughout the trip — independent travel is not permitted. From the border it is roughly four hours by car through open desert to reach the Darvaza gas crater.
